I will be asking the boy what he thinks of an airplane-flavoured birthday party. His seventh birthday is coming very soon. Lucky number 7 already... Can I believe that? No. I cannot. Also, my birthday is the very next day. Lucky number SOMETHING already... Can I believe THAT? NO. I CANNOT! Anyway, as far as decorations go, here's a possible until-I-get-permission-from-the-powers-that-be garland idea: the paper airplane garland. Suitable for a little boy, I think... What do you think?
Sublimely simple to make. Here's what I did...
Tutorial: Paper Airplane Garland
Make 150 tiny paper airplanes out of junk mail, old gift wrap, and other pretty coloured papers. I never said it was quick. I believe I used the term "simple".
Thread a needle with string. To string up your paper airplane, push the needle through the scotch-tape-hanger on each plane, and gently pull the string through. Repeat 150 times. No problem, eh?
Congratulations, you are done! Now go ahead! Hang your garland and watch those little flyers take off!
And if he decides he simply cannot tolerate the airplanes theme, I'll just leave the airplane garland up in the orangey-red spare bedroom where it hangs now, and have MY birthday party in there. Yes, it's a small room... That's okay, I am fine with small! I love small. Small is beautiful.
Please note that Kimberly at Bugaboo, Mini, Mr and Me recently did a Planes, Trains and Automobiles birthday party for her little one. She was the inspiration for my (possible) airplane-themed birthday party idea. Thanks for the (possible) idea Kimberly!
Now please have yourself a fine fine Monday, and I'll see you again soon!
This garland is so much fun!!! This would be great in a classroom as well.
ReplyDeleteThough I don’t like to fly, I would have loved a paper airplane garland on my birthday, which was yesterday! Thanks for another lovely tutorial!
ReplyDeleteso freaking cute! i hope the airplane theme is approved ;) and if not, at least you still have an adorable garland. happy early birthday!
ReplyDeletelove this idea! Would be an awesome decor for any little guys party and then could be added to their room to keep year round! Love the colorfulness!
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable!
ReplyDeleteI would be very surprised if a soon to be 7 year old nixed those amazing garlands. FUN!
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute, Michele! I love them!!!
ReplyDeleteMy.. that is lot of work.. 150 tiny planes!!! Wow!
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, I think the paper plane garland is a fabulous idea! I love it! My daughter also has a birthday coming and we are going to make a paper garland too!

This is an AWESOME garland. Super colorful and not too complicated. Love how bright it is. I'd use it for MY party too if I were you, too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sweet shout out - glad I could help inspire!
I can see a game where the boys have to fly their airplanes through a hoop. I see party hats with propellers on them. I see a great party!
ReplyDeleteVery clever idea...Juliet has some fun game ideas...
ReplyDeleteI think the lucky number 7 boy will love the airplane garland. Both my children were born on the lucky number 7 and they love paper airplanes.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to both lucky number 7 and 8 woo hoo! Hugs Nat
Outrageous! I didn't realize how teeny they were until the closeup. What a creation, I completely love it! And I love it against the red crazy walls - I mean, the lovely red walls...hee.
ReplyDeleteI love this!!! The pictures of the garland are just great, too. My son loves everything space and I'm thinking his next birthday might be space inspired, and this could easily be transformed into a rocket garland. Even if it's just a 150 (150???? man.... I can do it....) silver paper airplanes! Ohhhhh... Love it!
ReplyDeletethis is THE best garland idea i've seen in awhile! i hope you get the heads up to use it!!
ReplyDeleteSo freakin' cool!! I love this and I could actually make this (unlike those beautiful chains of paper cranes that I don't have the patience for!!)
ReplyDelete; ) Thanks!
I love that idea! Great way to recycle magazine pages too.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I am definately going to make some of these for the hubbie's birthday...the 'My Little Pony' stuff I put up for his last one won't cut it another year ;-)

Michele, how am I just seeing this now?! OMG this is fantastic! Simple ideas with big impact are THE BEST. And what a great way to use up junk mail? I love this as a party or event idea, but also as a permanent display! Can you imagine a library lobby with hundreds of these made from book pages floating overhead? Or a retail store or restaurant even? They lend such color and motion. I'm *itching* to find an opportunity to use these. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThis is a-dor-a-ble! And again, you wow me with your recycling prowess!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! And I love the garland against the orange/red walls. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! Paper airplane garland! Whoda thunk it! My son "borrows" all my printer paper to make airplanes. He's got quite an Air Force going in his room. He also steals paperclips to make the planes fly. Since I need all my paperclips back, I'll just take his Air Force and string it up! Sounds like a good trade to me.
ReplyDeleteThis garland was a BIG hit at my son's third birthday party last Sunday!!!! I even used mini clothespins & hung images of him through the past three years in between the aeroplanes. it turned out beautifully & at the end of the party we cut down several planes to send home as party favors :) Ingenious idea Michele & thank you so much for sharing in ALL your paper-craft creations!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what I was looking for :)I'm planing airplane party for my 3year old . My girls would love to work on this project, it would be a perfect b-day surprise from older sisters :)
ReplyDeletemy girlies are mad keen on airplane construction.. they like to swap in and out with the paper boats obssession..this is such a magical idea for their busy wee fingers. really enjoying your blog thanks so much for sharing:)
