Behind The Seams

I'm fascinated with the back of my quilt top. There's so much going on back there: the mess of raw edges, the loose threads exposed, the maze of stitching, the geometry of construction. It's all there. It's the proof I need sometimes. The proof that wakes me up to the surprising reality that I've made this thing. Me! I have chosen this particular arrangement of fabrics. I have cut every one of these pieces. I have stitched every stitch. I have pressed each joint. I have toiled darn it. And here behind the seams, is my proof.

When I'm feeling quite lazy, I sometimes toy with the idea of stopping right here and leaving the back exposed. To show everyone. To get them to better appreciate the work I do. But then I reconsider. I mean, the top would never attain full-fledged quiltdom, would it? The poor thing would flounder forever unfinished. Is quilt top limbo really what I want for my efforts? No. Better to toil on and give that quilt top exactly what it deserves. A lifetime of cuddling with me!

And who, in their right mind, wouldn't want that? Only a crazy, that's who.

Have yourself a fine fine day. I'll be back tomorrow (yes Thursday) for the start of Drop-Dead Denim!

  6. I often have the same thoughts.

Its such a neat look to the backs of an unquilted quilt. Some are a total mess and others nicely laid out.

  7. I can understand your feelings about the back! Same with me... the back looks so interesting...! But even more I like the feeling when everything is finished... I never ever believe afterwards that I made that quilt! (and I already made some for baby gifts or for family... all last minute ^^)

There is nothing like the love to a handmade quilt! I am so curious how yours will look at the end! And keep it far away from me, I might sneak in and also cuddle with it ;)

  12. Lovely photos full of quilty texture! I do like photos of the backs of quilt tops with all those seams framing the fabrics. This is going to make a lovely snuggly quilt when you've finished with it.
